The Latin America Experts' Day at the DFG in Bonn attracted a large number of attendees

(02.02.16) The Latin America Experts' Day, held at DFG Head Office in Bonn on 17 December, gave participants the chance to find out about existing collaborations and discover the potential of the region through practical examples. Institutions with links to Latin America, such as the Brazil Centre at the University of Münster, which has a strategic partnership with the University of São Paulo, and the Heidelberg Center for Latin America in Santiago de Chile presented their activities and cooperations. Other speakers shared their experiences of the BRAGECRIM programme in Brazil, the Mexican Research Training Group "Entre Espacios" and an example of successful international cooperation in the individual grants programme. Finally, there was a discussion of current conditions for cooperation, suggested improvements and ways of deepening international cooperation.

(22.03.16) “The old new and the new new” was the pertinent theme of the trip taken to Colombia by DFG President Professor Peter Strohschneider and DFG Vice President Professor Wolfgang Ertmer. A delegation of six had many opportunities to talk about the research systems in the two countries and to shed light on the similarities and differences between their science policy strategies and priorities in Bogotá, Medellín and Santa Marta.

(23.03.16) On 9th March delegates from institutions in Germany and Argentina gathered for the fifth meeting within the framework of the Scientific and Technological Cooperation (WTZ) initiative between Argentina and Germany. The meeting took place in Argentina’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCyt) and was organised in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The event was chaired by Dr. Miguel Ángel Blesa, Secretary of Planning and Politics in Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, and Thomas Rachel, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMBF.

The National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), one of the DFG's Argentinian partner organisations, is one of the supporters of the event.

(22.04.16) The 9th meeting of the "Brazilian-German Workshop on Applied Surface Science" took place from 10 - 14 April 2016 in Maresias, in the federal state of São Paulo. This series of workshops was launched in 1995 and since then has taken place every two and a half years with the venue alternating between Brazil and Germany. According to Professor Dr. Horst Niehus, Professor Emeritus at the Humboldt University of Berlin and one of the initiators of the event, the purpose of the meeting since its inauguration has been to bring together researchers in surface science and nanoscience.

(26.04.16) The second funding period of the German-Brazilian International Research Training Group "Dynamic Phenomena in Complex Networks" was launched on 1 April 2016. The Research Training Group has been funded by the DFG and FAPESP since 2011 and both organisations have extended it by another four and a half years. The Research Training Group programme focusses on theoretical studies on the principles of self-organisation in complex networks that change over time.

(26.04.16) The DFG was represented in the "Research in Germany" team which attended the 22nd International Heart Research Conference of the International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) in Buenos Aires from 18-21 April 2016. The motto for the event, which was held for the first time in Latin America, was "Unraveling the Mysteries of the Heart at the Rhythm of Tango". Approximately 500 delegates were registered to attend the conference.

Call for German-Brazilian Research Projects in Manufacturing Technology

(25.05.16) As part of the BRAGECRIM Agreement (Brazilian German Collaborative Research Initiative in Manufacturing Technology) between the DFG and its Brazilian partner organisations CAPES and CNPq, researchers interested in collaborating with Brazilian colleagues have until 15 June 2016 to submit their proposals. Projects focusing on production sciences will receive funding.

(25.07.16) The DFG sent delegates to the 68th annual meeting of the SBPC (the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science) between 3 and 9 July in Porto Seguro in the south of the Brazilian state of Bahia. The SBPC is the umbrella organisation for more than 100 associated scientific societies.

(01.08.16) From 29 August until 1 September, the Research in Germany initiative will be present at the 31st annual congress of FESBE, the umbrella organisation which brings together various learned societies in the field of experimental biology, in Foz do Iguaçu in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná. The organisations represented through FESBE include learned societies for biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology and immunology.

(02.08.16) The DFG is to participate in the 25th International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS), represented by the director of the DFG Office Latin America, Dr. Kathrin Winkler. The conference takes place from 14 to 19 August in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará in north-east Brazil, and will be hosted for the first time by the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). ICORS is the leading international event in the field of Raman research, one of the most important areas in photonics.

(03.08.16) The “Mexican Week of Science and Technology” took place at the Mexican Embassy in Berlin from 4 to 6 July, as part of the Dual Year Germany - Mexico. The goal of the event was to present the results of Mexican-German scientific cooperation to a selected audience, and to create a forum for discussion about science and the humanities, research, training for early career researchers, and technology.

(07.09.16) The 25th International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS) took place in Fortaleza between 14 and 18 August 2016. Leading researchers from many different countries also took part. During the conference, scientific questions, applications and the latest developments in Raman spectroscopy in all areas of science were presented.

(07.09.16) The 25th annual meeting of the Brazilian Materials Research Society (SBPMat) will take place at the Expo Dom Pedro conference centre between 25 and 29 September 2016 in the city of Campinas near São Paulo. With symposia in nanomaterials and synthesis, characterisation and modelling, energy and sustainability, electronics and photonics, and biomaterials and soft matter, the event will address current developments and perspectives in materials science and technology.

(21.09.16) From 14 to 19 August 2016, the XXV International Materials Research Congress was held in Mexico. Once again, the annual event was held at the JW Marriott conference hotel in Cancún. After its thoroughly successful participation last year, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) once again joined forces with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to organise a “Research in Germany” information stand and workshop as part of the German Year in Mexico.

(28.09.16) Between 28 August and 1 September, the Brazilian umbrella organisation FeSBE (Federação de Sociedades de Biologia Experimental) held its 31st annual scientific conference in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, famous for its stunning waterfalls in the tri-border area of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.

(07.10.16) In the second week of September, the institution Intercom, founded in 1977 in São Paulo, held its 39th annual congress at the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP). The event was organised by the Brazilian Society of Interdisciplinary Communication Studies (Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação), which promotes the exchange of knowledge between researchers and practitioners in the communication sector.

(19.10.2016) The seventh edition of the Brazilian Oceanography Congress will take place from 5 to 9 November in Salvador, the capital of Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia. This year’s event will focus on the topics of ocean acidification, natural marine resources, paleoceanography, and man and ocean and on teaching and the labour market in the marine science sector in relation to climate change and its impact on the ocean and coastal regions.

(19.10.16) During the 25th annual meeting of the Brazilian Materials Research Society (SBPMat), which took place from 25 to 29 September in Campinas near São Paulo, the DFG Office Latin America invited representatives from the Research in Germany initiative to attend and organised the first Science Lunch. (28.10.16) As part of the 21st Congress of the Brazilian Society of Automatics (Sociedade Brasileira de Automática – SBA), which took place from 3 to 7 October in Vitória, the capital of the north-eastern state of Espírito Santo, the “Research in Germany” initiative offered a day of advisory services and an information event. The goal of the event was to increase and foster interaction between the scientific community, industry and students, as well as to serve as a forum where participants could exchange ideas and information.

(24.11.16) As part of the Mexico-Germany Dual Year 2016-17, a number of researchers, industry representatives and government officials met in Mexico City to discuss the current situation and the future of German-Mexican collaboration in science, technology and innovation. Around 230 attendees held discussions in eight different sessions on topics such as energy and climate sustainability, health research and biotechnology, aerospace research, materials science, Industry 4.0 and urban mobility.

(25.11.16) The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the funding agency for the federal state of São Paulo (FAPESP) are announcing a joint call to run German-Brazilian workshops. The aim is to promote the intensification of the collaboration between researchers from Germany and the Brazilian state of São Paulo through joint activities that can form a potential starting point for the development of new bilateral research projects.

(29.11.16) From 14 to 16 November 2016, members of the German-Brazilian research initiative BRAGECRIM (Brazilian German Collaborative Research Initiative on Manufacturing Technology) gathered for the eighth annual meeting. During the two-day meeting, early career researchers presented ongoing projects on the topic of manufacturing technology.

(29.11.16) This year’s Humboldt Kolleg entitled “Environments: Technoscience and its Relation to Sustainability, Ethics, Aesthetics, Health and the Human Future” was held at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCAR) in the Brazilian state of São Paulo between 3 and 5 November 2016. In addition to scientific talks, the programme included a poster exhibition and a number of Humboldtians reporting on experiences from their careers. The “Study and Research in Germany” panel saw the DFG present funding opportunities for Brazilian researchers.

(12.12.16) On 1 December, 2016, more than 100 interested people gathered at the location of the research funding organisation of the state of São Paulo, FAPESP, to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the collaboration between the DFG and FAPESP. The event was formally opened by FAPESP Vice President Eduardo Moacyr Krieger, the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Axel Zeidler, the Scientific Director of FAPESP, Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, and the Head of the DFG Office Latin America, Kathrin Winkler.

(12.12.16) From 29.11 to 1.12.2016 a German-Argentine workshop on ocean sciences took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Around 15 researchers from Germany and 45 from Argentina gathered at Polo Cientifico, home to the Argentine Ministry of Science, MINCYT, and the research funding organisation CONICET. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) also participated in the event.

German and Brazilian Experts Discuss Social Participation in the City of Tomorrow

(15.12.16) Forty years from now, half of the world’s population will live in urban spaces and large cities. As well as consequences such as climate change and globalisation, this has important social implications. How will cities change as a result and how should they change? Who will be affected by this and to what extent can we find joint solutions? Researchers and experts from business and government discussed these and related issues during the German-Brazilian Dialogue on Science, Research and Innovation. For the fifth consecutive year, this event took place on 29 and 30 November in São Paulo – this year’s title being “The City of Tomorrow – Tackling Urban Challenges and Opportunities”.
