DFG signs letter of intent with Universidad de los Andes

(28.01.14) In December 2013 the DFG signed a letter of intent with the Universidad de los Andes. The private university in Bogotá (Uniandes) is one of the three universities with the strongest research profiles and highest international visibility in Colombia. Rankings show that it is also one of the most renowned in Latin America.

(25.02.14) On 13 February 2014 in São Paulo, an event entitled "Estudar e pesquisar na Alemanha. Programas de bolsa e fomento" was held as part of the Max Planck Science Tunnel. The event was one of several sequences of institutional information sessions in connection with the presentation of the Max Planck Science Tunnel in São Paulo. The DFG was represented by liaison scientist Prof. Dr. Helmut Galle. There was an audience of over 100 people.

Cooperation with Brazil: Proposals invited at any time with partner organisations FAPESP and FAPEMIG

(27.02.14) For many years the DFG has operated a successful joint funding programme with Brazilian partner organisations FAPESP, in the state of São Paulo, and FAPEMIG, in the state of Minas Gerais, on the basis of bilateral cooperation agreements. Joint German-Brazilian funding proposals to establish international collaborations, as well as for research grants, may be submitted at any time and in any field. There are no specific calls for proposals or set deadlines for submission. Instead, proposals may be submitted at any time of year. German and Brazilian applicants must submit proposals in line with the current guidelines of the DFG, FAPESP and/or FAPEMIG.

(09.05.14) As part of his trip to Mexico City on 22 April, the DFG President, Prof. Dr. Peter Strohschneider and the General Director of the National Mexican Council for Research and Technology (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, CONACYT), Prof. Dr. Enrique Cabrero Mendoza, signed a new collaboration agreement to facilitate joint financing of not only new and individual German-Mexican projects but also coordinated funding programmes such as Research Units and Collaborative Research Centres.

(09.05.14) The 23rd Latin American Colloquium on Earth Sciences took place with the support of the DFG from 25-27 March 2014 at the University of Heidelberg. This regular event was organised by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Stinnesbeck and Dr. Christina Ifrim from the Geological Institute at the University of Heidelberg.

(27.05.14) On 22 May the DFG and FAPERJ, the research funding organisation for the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, signed a cooperation agreement enabling the joint funding of initiation and individual projects in all areas of research. The agreement was formally presented by Prof. Dr. Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist from the University of Bochum and recipient of the 2013 Leibniz Prize, to FAPERJ president Prof. Ruy Garcia Marques for him to sign.

(30.06.14) Within the framework of the existing agreement between the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), CONICET has announced the funding of joint German-Argentine research projects for the year 2015 in all research areas.

Prize-Winning Mathematician Günter M. Ziegler to Present Lectures in Brazil

(27.08.14) The DFG Office Latin America and the São Paulo Liaison Office of the Freie Universität Berlin have invited Professor Günter M. Ziegler, mathematician and winner of the DFG Leibniz Prize in 2001, to visit Brazil to present the Leibniz Lecture “Stars, Polyhedra, Ellipses and Soap Bubbles: Some Stellar Images between Geometry and Physics”. The keynote address will open the 3rd German-Brazilian Dialogue on Science, Research and Innovation, promoted by the German House of Science and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH-SP).

(06.10.14) At the 16th International Congress on Photobiology in Cordoba an event by the "Research in Germany" campaign was held, organised for the first time as part of a conference in Argentina.

The congress, which is held every five years, is attended by high-calibre researchers in photobiology. Approximately 500 participants from 38 different countries took part.

DFG Attends the 60th Brazilian Congress on Genetics

(06.10.14) As part of the "Research in Germany" campaign, the DFG attended the 60th Brazilian Congress on Genetics in Guarujá in the state of São Paulo. Alongside representatives from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the DFG provided information about its collaboration and funding programmes.

(09.10.14) On 30 September, at the invitation of the DFG’s Latin America Office and the São Paulo Liaison Office of the Free University Berlin, Prof. Günter M. Ziegler held a Leibniz Lecture in São Paulo on “Stars, Polyhedra, Ellipses and Soap Bubbles: Some Stellar Images between Geometry and Physics”. The Leibniz Lecture was also the kick-off of the 3rd German-Brazilian Dialogue on Science, Research and Innovation, which was organised by the German House of Science and Innovation São Paulo and this year engaged in discussions on „Dynamical Phenomena in Complex Networks“ and „Solutions for the Attractive Mediation of Mathematics“.

Participation in the 38th Annual Meeting of ANPOCS (National Social Sciences Association of Brazil)

(04.12.14) Between 27 and 30 October, ANPOCS held its 38th annual meeting in Caxambu in the state of Minas Gerais. This is the most important academic gathering of social scientists in Brazil, with participants representing various disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, political science, philosophy, history and law. With around 1800 attendees, the event provided an extremely varied and interdisciplinary programme. It was accompanied by an exhibition at which the Research in Germany campaign had its own stand to tell participants about research opportunities in Germany.
