(05/02/13) An "International Scientific Cooperation" event took place at the Universidad Austral de Chile (UACH) in Valdivia on 2 May. It was organised by the DFG's liaison scientist in Chile, Prof. Dr. Gudrun Kausel and the Director of the International Department of the UACH, Prof. Dr. Charlotte Lovengreen.

(05/08/13) Within the framework of talks between the German and Argentinian governments on science and technology, an agreement was concluded on 8 May in Berlin between the DFG and the Argentinian Ministry for Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCYT) in the presence of the Federal Minister for Research, Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka.

(05/10/13) The second "Research in Germany" event was held on 10 May in Bogotá. It was supported jointly by the DAAD (the organisers), the DFG and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The purpose of the event was provide Columbian researchers with information about opportunities for research and funding in Germany or with German partners.

(05/16/13) From 13-16 May 2013, Ouro Preto in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais was the venue for a German-Brazilian workshop on “Environmental Impacts of Mining and Water Usage: Processes, Feedbacks, Impacts”. It was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Axel Bronstert (University of Potsdam) and Prof. Dr. Luiz Palmieer (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais).

(23.07.13) On 21 June, at the invitation of the state government of Minas Gerais, the German House for Research and Innovation in São Paulo (DWIH-SP) and several of its members introduced themselves in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The event was attended by leading academic, political and business figures from the host state.

DFG Latin America office takes part in 2nd review seminar for National Institutes of Science and Technology in Brasília

(23.07.13) Between 2 and 4 July, the second review seminar for Brazil's National Institutes for Science and Technology (INCTs) was held in the country's capital. The DFG's Latin America office was invited by collaboration partner CNPq to take part in the review process as an observer. Over 600 people participated in the seminar, including 33 national and international observers.

(28.08.13) The fifth annual meeting of BRAGECRIM – the Brazilian German Collaborative Research Initiative in Manufacturing Technology – will take place from 30 September to 3 October 2013 at the Nucleus for Advanced Manufacturing (NUMA) at the University of São Paulo in São Carlos.

(26.09.13) On September 18th the DFG Office for Latin America held a meeting with European and North American funding organisations and their representatives in Brazil. Reason for this meeting was the exchange of experiences regarding collaboration with Brazil in the area of scientific research and research funding.

(27.09.13) On September 23rd the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German House for Science and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH-SP) and the German-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in São Paulo (AHK Brasil) organized a lecture on Electrochemical technologies for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment.

(25.10.13) The platform for biodiversity, ecosystem monitoring and research was launched in Cuenca in South Ecuador on 16 October. The platform is funded jointly by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) and its Ecuadorian partner organisation Secretaria Nacional de Educación Superior, Ciencia y Tecnología e Innovación (SENESCYT). The ceremony was attended by approximately 80 guests from the fields of science and the environment, from the public and from diplomatic circles.

(25.10.13) The fifth annual meeting of BRAGECRIM – the Brazilian-German Collaborative Research Initiative on Manufacturing Technology – took place from 30 September to 3 October 2013 at the Nucleus for Advanced Manufacturing (NUMA) at the University of São Paulo in São Carlos.

Funding of joint German-Argentine research projects

(04.11.13) Within the framework of existing agreements between the Argentine Ministry for Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCYT), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), MINCYT and CONICET have announced the funding of joint German-Argentine research projects for the year 2015 in the following areas:

  • Materials Science and Engineering (not including Solid-state Physics and Solid-state Chemistry)

  • Geology, Geophysics, Geodesy, Palaeontology

  • Plant Sciences (not including Plant Breeding, Plant Production, and Plant Medicine)

  • Social Sciences and Humanities

(18.11.13) The annual meeting of the Mexican Geophysical Society was held this year from 3 - 8 November in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) was represented with a stand at the event where congress attendees could obtain information about the options for research visits and participation in a collaboration with Germany.
