DFG Office Latin America Launches Interactive Tool for the New Year
(18.12.18) An eventful 2018 is drawing to a close - a good opportunity to review activities in Latin America over the last twelve months. The DFG was represented in over fifteen cities in six countries at events and meetings with partner organisations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico. Advising researchers - from both Latin America and Germany - is a central task for the DFG Office Latin America, based in São Paulo. In view of the complexity of the German research funding system and the wide spectrum of opportunities for international cooperation, the DFG office has introduced a new interactive presentation as an additional source of information for researchers in Latin America. The tool will provide interested parties with an initial overview of funding programmes and cooperation opportunities.

The DFG works closely with its partner organisations in Latin America. Over the last year, cooperation agreements with the funding institution CONACYT in Mexico and Universidad de los Andes (UNIANDES) in Colombia were extended. Four new announcements for funding of bilateral research projects were also published: with CONARE in Costa Rica, CAPES and FAPEMIG in Brazil, and with CONICET in Argentina – a result of methodical work with funding providers in the respective countries.
2018 also saw special efforts on the part of the DFG Office Latin America to promote dialogue between the scientific community and the general public. For example, the first showing in Brazil of the DFG photographic exhibition “Serra da Capivara – The Oldest Traces of Settlement in America?” was held in July at the annual meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) in Maceió and in October at the open day of the German House for Research and Innovation in São Paulo. The exhibition is now appearing in a new format at one of the most popular museums in the country, the Museu do Amanhã in Rio de Janeiro. Until mid-February the general public will have the chance to admire the natural beauty of Serra da Capivara in Andre Pessoa's photographs, to find out more about its history and archaeology in the 45-minute Terra-X documentary film “Sensational Find in Brazil. The Oldest Americans” and, not least, to get a nice overview of the connection between art and science.
Another highlight of 2018 for the DFG Office Latin America was the Leibniz Lectures with Prof. Dr. Michael Brecht in Brazil and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wörner in Chile and, in the modified form of the Leibniz Café, with Prof. Dr. Gustavo Villainous in Argentina. With these events, the Office fostered a dialogue between Leibniz prizewinners and the scientific community.
In fulfilment of its role as a contact point for researchers, it organised a wide range of consultations and information events at various international congresses in Argentina, Mexico and Brazil as part of the Research in Germany campaign and in close cooperation with the support institutions of the DWIH São Paulo.
The new online presentation represents an additional source of information. Aimed at researchers in Latin America, it introduces the largest research funding organisation in Germany and provides an overview of the DFG's funding instruments for international cooperation and research visits in Germany.
