(03.07.18) As part of the 70th annual meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC), to be held in Maceió in July, the DFG is to present the exhibition ‘The Brazilian World Heritage Site of Serra da Capivara – The Oldest Traces of Settlement in America?’ at the stand of the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) São Paulo.

Serra da Capivara in north-eastern Brazil is known for its unique archaeological sites, including famous rock paintings, which are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recent research suggests that these traces of settlement, which are thousands of years old, may be the oldest in the Americas.

The exhibition, featuring photography by André Pessoa, showcases not just archaeological research but also the fascinating flora and fauna, as well as local cultures and traditions. The ZDF documentary film ‘Sensational Find in Brazil – the Oldest Americans’, part of the ‘Terra X’ series, is being shown during the exhibition, presenting the latest research findings from the region.

Participants at the meeting will also gain an insight into the research results of the DFG-funded project ‘The beginning of food production in semiarid north-east Brazil: the example of Serra da Capivara, Piauí’, carried out by the Commission for Archaeology of Non-European Cultures at the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). The project is investigating the development from mobile hunters and gatherers to settled farmers, which is considered the foundation for the development of complex societies.

The exhibition has already been shown in Berlin and Bonn, strikingly revealing the importance of the World Heritage Site of Serra da Capivara in terms of the archaeology, biodiversity and culture of the region and indeed the study of human history.
