"1st International Symposium on Multiscale Multiphase Process Engineering (MMPE)" in Kanazawa, Japan
Japanese-German projects in the field of biochemical and chemical engineering
The inaugural "International Symposium on Multiscale Multiphase Process Engineering" was held in Kanazawa, Japan, on 4-7 October 2011. This German-Japanese event attracted over 100 international participants. The group of roughly 20 (early career) researchers from Germany attending the symposium initiated a range of bilateral projects during the event. The next symposium will be held in 2014 in Hamburg.
The "1st International Symposium on Multiscale Multiphase Process Engineering (MMPE)" is part of a joint effort to revitalise German-Japanese cooperation and builds on the success of the "Japanese/German Symposium on Bubble Columns (JGSBC)" (1988-2006). The revamped symposium, with its broader focus and more international scope, is designed to promote German-Japanese cooperation in the field of biochemical and chemical engineering. This year’s event brought researchers from Germany, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the USA to Japan. Myra Bauersachs, from the DFG Office in Japan, journeyed to Kanazawa to gain her own impression of this successful German-Japanese venture.
The symposium provided early career researchers in particular with an extraordinary opportunity to present their work to an international expert audience. The Q&A sessions and poster presentations saw the participants engage in lively discussions.
The symposium was co-chaired by the project’s initiators: Professor Dr.Michael Schlüter (TU Hamburg-Harburg), Professor Dr. Dieter Bothe (TU Darmstadt), Professor Dr. Korekazu Ueyama (Kogakuin University) and Professor Dr. Koichi Terasaka (Keio University). A scientific committee established by the group also laid the foundations for several bilateral cooperation projects during the symposium, and selected a number of previously submitted cooperation project sketches which will be presented to the DFG and JSPS for funding.
The announcement of the "2nd International Symposium on MMPE" in October 2014 met with considerable applause at the reception.
