DFG at European Research Council 10th Anniversary Celebrations in New Delhi

(13.06.17) Set up in 2007 by the European Union, the European Research Council (ERC) celebrated its 10th Anniversary on 29th March 2017, at Hotel - The Claridges, New Delhi. The ERC, with an objective to stimulate scientific excellence in all fields within Europe, has been supporting the very best scientists, scholars from all over the world including India to pursue ground-breaking research. Therefore, with an intent to inform Indian scientists and scholars about the various funding possibilities, ERC in association with the delegation of the European Union to India, Embassies of the EU Member States & Associate Countries and EURAXESS India organized a day long information and networking event “Funding Opportunities in Europe for Creative Minds from Anywhere in the World” on 29th March 2017.

The day’s proceedings commenced with the welcome address by Mrs. Tania Friederichs, Head, Research & Innovation, Delegation of EU to India followed by an opening address by H.E. Mr. Tomasz Kozlowski, Ambassador of the EU to India. This was followed by a keynote address by Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, who emphasized about the strong scientific collaborations between Indian and EU and the need to further strengthening of this co-operations. Thereafter, Dr. Theodore Papazoglou, Head of the Unit, Support to the ERC Scientific Council gave a presentation on “European Research Council Beyond the first decade” which was followed by Testimonies and Scientific presentations by ERC laureates, elaborating the various ERCs funding programmes and opportunities for Indian researchers.

Towards the second half of the day, a roundtable networking session between the participating EU countries and Indian scientist & young researchers was organized. Germany was represented by Mr. Stephan Lanzinger, Counsellor, Head of Science and Technology Section, Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany in India, along with representative of DFG (by Dr. Vaibhav Agarwal), DAAD, University of Heidelberg and Freie University Berlin. During the networking session, young PhDs, Postdoctoral fellows and faculty members were acquainted with research landscape in Germany, various DFG funding programmes for Indo-German research collaboration and for pursuing research careers in Germany, the ''Land of Ideas''. The event gave a platform to the participants including the representatives of universities and research institutes to meet the delegation of leading European research and funding agencies. It was an opportunity for the participants to know more about the programme of European commission, mechanisms of research mobility as well as first-hand information on the research collaborations opportunities available for them.
