University of Mainz and Amity University join hands towards research in Microbiology

An Indo - German Workshop in the framework of DFG’s programme for "Initiation and Intensification of Bilateral Cooperation" was held at Amity University, Noida, India from March 22 – 24, 2011.

This workshop was organized with the aim of identifying research topics of common interest in the areas of

  • Beneficial interaction between Microbes and Plants

  • Energy from renewable natural resources

  • Novel development in applied microbiology – Food

Professor Dr. Ajit Varma, Director General, Amity Institute of Microbial Technology and Professor Dr. Helmut König, Institute for Microbiology and Wine Research, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, brought together Indian and German experts to deliberate and identify specific research projects which could be applied for bilateral funding. Professor König led a group of ten eminent German scientists, not only from the German universities in Hohenheim, Jena, Mainz and Marburg, but also from Helmholtz Research Centres, Leibniz Institute, Max-Planck-Institute and Max-Rubner Institute, who had ample opportunities to interact with some 80 – 100 Indian scientists from all over India as well as from Nepal. Scientists from some of the leading Indian institutes attended the conference e.g. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru University etc.
