Alliance working group "Infrastructures in Terrestrial Research"

In October 2013, in response to a suggestion by the DFG, the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany decided to set up a working group on Infrastructures in Terrestrial Research, under the joint guidance of the DFG and the Helmholtz Association, for a period of five years.

The Alliance working group was established on the basis of the strategy paper "Long-term perspectives and infrastructure in terrestrial research in Germany – a systematic approach", drawn up by three DFG Senate Commissions (Senate Commission on Agroecosystem Research, Senate Commission on Future Directions in Geoscience, Senate Commission on Water Research) and the German Committee Future Earth that appeared in early 2013.

The inaugural meeting of the Infrastructures in Terrestrial Research Alliance working group took place on 14 March 2014 in Bonn.

There are two representatives from each Alliance member organisation in the working group. Prof. Kögel-Knabner from Technical University of Munich and Prof. Georg Teutsch from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research UFZ in Leipzig share the role of chair equally.

The group has set itself the goal of creating and if appropriate expanding a national infrastructure network, including national research sites and various research institutions, and laying the foundations for closer collaboration with public bodies at both federal and state level. During a roundtable discussion on 6 and 7 November 2014 at the Head Office of the Helmholtz Association in Berlin, four expert groups were set up and assigned a mandate. The groups are "Data Management" (supervised by Professor Löw), "International Networking" (supervised by Professor von Blanckenburg), "Environmental System Theories" (supervised by Professor Lischeid) and "Governance" (supervised by Professor Vereecken).

Professor Dr. Alexander Löw

The Alliance working group ‘Infrastructures in Terrestrial Research’ is sad to report the death of former member Professor Dr. Alexander Löw, LMU Munich, who made an important contribution to the group as leader of the Data Management expert group. Prof. Löw died in tragic circumstances on 2 July 2017. The working group is deeply saddened by the loss of an esteemed colleague.

The Alliance working group Infrastructures in Terrestrial Research officially commenced its duties on 14 March 2014 in Bonn.
